Sarah Irvine

Sarah Irvine’s musical identity is a tapestry of contrasts: from the eccentric energy of an Australian circus clown band to the storied traditions of Edinburgh’s folk scene. Known for a whimsical folk sound, tender storytelling, and delicately beautiful vocals, Irvine spent years pouring grit and heart into her duo Weird Cousins. Following the project’s dissolution, she performed and toured with artists such as Moteh Parrott, Dowally, and Humbird; however, it was the transformative arrival of motherhood that pushed her to finally claim her own space as a solo songwriter.
Her debut album, Painted Light (releasing October 2026), is a stamp in time - a capsule of both monumental and ordinary moments. In this collection, what’s fleeting is cherished, and what’s difficult is handled like prisms of broken glass. These ten collaborative tracks are a glowing reflection on love in its variety of forms, chronicling the transformations that love can undergo with the perspective of time and space.
Carving out that "time and space" was a feat in itself; Irvine crafted, arranged, and recorded these songs while committing to her role as a new mother and full-time caregiver. Listeners will hear aesthetic nods to timeless artists like Sandy Denny, as well as modern contemporaries like Madison Cunningham, Laura Marling, and Aoife O’Donovan. A recipient of Creative Scotland funding, Irvine’s intention with the release is to offer “connection with other mothers and parents, and perhaps say something to that transformative experience,” honouring the strength required to navigate a world that often renders mothers invisible. It serves as a gentle, honest mirror, accompanying the listener as their own process of change and discovery blossoms in the colourful shades of the wholly, holy ordinary world.
